Dr. Zakir Husain Library, JMI conducts Scopus Workshop and releases the Library Brochure

TNN News : The Dr. Zakir Husain Library, Jamia Millia Islamia in collaboration with Elsevier, yesterday inaugurated a workshop on Publishing in Scopus-Indexed Journals at the university’s Faculty of Engineering Auditorium.  Specifically designed for  JMI faculty members and researchers, the objective of the workshop was to enhance research publication skills and provide guidance on effectively publishing scholarly work in high-impact journals indexed in Scopus. From the over 800 faculty members and research scholars who had registered for the workshop, over 500 participated in it.

The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mazhar Asif, was the Chief Patron while the Registrar, JMI,  Prof. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, was the Patron of the Workshop.

The event was graced by Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar, JMI; Prof. Neelofer Afzal, Dean Students’ Welfare, JMI; Prof. Kafeel Ahmad, Dean, Research & Innovation, JMI; Dr. Vikas S. Nagrale,  University Librarian, JMI and invited resource persons, Dr. Vinita Saroha and Mr. Ravindra Kumar Gupta from Elsevier. All the dignitaries including Deans, HoDs, Directors, Provosts, the Chief Proctor attended the event along with distinguished faculty members and researchers .The programme commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran and its translation, followed by the soulful rendition of the ‘Jamia Tarana’  and felicitation of the guests.

Prof. Rizvi, Registrar, JMI in his address, emphasized that researchers must be aware of how to conduct high quality research and ensure its publication in reputed journals and books. He drew attention to the importance of indexing and the serious implications of plagiarism. Stressing that academic honesty, credibility, and integrity are the cornerstones of true scholarship, he urged that these values should never be compromised, for they reflect not only the strength of a researcher but also the character of a good human being. He further emphasized the need for cultivating critical thinking, as it sharpens the mind and elevates the quality of research.

In the introductory address, Dr. Vikas S. Nagrale, University Librarian, JMI, expressed his sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, JMI, Prof. Mazhar Asif, for his unwavering support for the development of University and Dr. Zakir Husain Library and his visionary leadership. He also warmly welcomed Prof. Rizvi, Registrar, JMI and expressed gratitude for his steadfast trust in the library for undertaking such initiatives and his unflinching support throughout the event and for future endeavours.

The University Librarian emphasized that this workshop is a part of the library’s ongoing initiatives to strengthen research culture and support academic aspirations of students and faculty. This initiative is expected to empower researchers with the knowledge and tools for impactful publishing while showcasing the library’s commitment to academic excellence at Jamia Millia Islamia.

Professor Neelofer Afzal, Dean of Students’ Welfare, in her address, encouraged the researchers to actively engage and ask critical questions, thereby fostering a culture of research and scholarship that will set a benchmark for JMI.

During the event, the Library Brochure of Dr. Zakir Husain Library was formally released. The brochure provides comprehensive information on library resources, services, facilities, digital initiatives, and research support services offered to the academic community of JMI.

A formal vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Sandeep Sharma, Assistant Librarian, Dr. Zakir Husain Library, JMI.

Ms. Vinita Saroha form Elsevier shed light on how to chooses Scopus Indexed Journals for enhancing publication results. She deliberated on themes like – understanding researcher’s needs and key research metrics, Research challenges, the best practices in literature survey, ways in which Scopus can help the researcher position their research work and also stressed upon the use of responsible Gen AI in Research. The other technical session taken by Mr. Ravindra Kumar Gupta focused on Elsevier’s solutions for the disciplines of Chemistry, Biology, and Material Science. He also elaborated on document search strategies utilizing Artificial Intelligence.

These technical sessions were followed by Q&A session. The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from scholars and faculty members from various disciplines, who engaged in interactive discussions on the challenges and opportunities in scholarly publishing.

Prof. Kafeel Ahmad, Dean of Research & Innovation, in his concluding remarks, shared valuable insights on the pursuit of research. He commended the University Librarian for initiating this much-needed endeavour, describing it as timely and beneficial for the JMI research community. He further reiterated the importance of organizing more such programmes in the future, so that both faculty members and research scholars may continue to benefit from these initiatives.

The programme was successfully conducted by Dr. Umaima, Asstt. Archivist and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sufian Ahmad, Deputy Librarian. The event came to a close with the playing of the National Anthem.
