Subject Association of Department of Arabic, JMI organizes literary and cultural performances

The Subject Association, Department of Arabic, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), organised a cultural program at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering. Students took part in a variety of literary and cultural performances, and the event also witnessed the launch of the students’ quarterly wall magazine.

Professor Fauzan Ahmad, Head, Department of Arabic, presided over the program. Dr. Irshad Ahmad, former Ambassador of India to Syria and Director of the Indian Council of World Affairs, was the Guest of Honour.

The event began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a Naat and the Jamia Tarana. Newly admitted undergraduate and postgraduate students introduced themselves to the audience, and a few students recited ghazals.

The main attraction was the Arabic play Mahzala al-Sharaf (“The Farce of Honour”). It tells the story of a judge who rushes to give verdicts without thinking carefully about each case, and many people suffer as a result. Through the scene set in the Hereafter the play powerfully display the importance of justice, accountability, and human rights.

Guest of Honour Recalls His Days at Jamia

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Irshad Ahmad spoke about his own years at Jamia Millia Islamia. After completing his Alimiat course at Jamia al-Falah, he joined Jamia and completed his research thesis under the guidance of Professor Ziaul Hasan Nadvi.

Looking back, he said the campus did not have as many buildings or as much greenery as it does today, but it was already full of academic and research activity. He said Jamia is now not only lively but also rich in learning and research. He shared fond memories of his time at the university and spoke about his experiences, explaining how they helped him succeed at different stages of his life.

Professor Fauzan Ahmad thanked Dr. Irshad Ahmad for accepting the invitation. Welcoming the new students, he spoke about how important their admission to the Department of Arabic is. He advised them to value their time and said that Jamia offers not just an education but also a rich academic and cultural environment. He encouraged students to make full use of it, to take part in cultural activities to develop their talents, and to make a place for themselves in the world.

The program was organised under the guidance of Professor Fauzan Ahmad, Head, Department of Arabic, and Dr. Mahfoozur Rahman, Adviser to the Subject Association. Mr. Ishtiaq Ahmad (Vice President), Mr. Mohammad Ariz (General Secretary), Mr. Shamsul Qamar (Joint Secretary), and their team worked together to make the event a success.

The program was attended by faculty members and students of the Department of Arabic, who warmly appreciated the students’ academic, literary, and creative talents.
