AMU JNMCH Department of Psychiatry Observes World Schizophrenia Awareness Day with Public Education Programme

TNN News : The Department of Psychiatry, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), observed World Schizophrenia Awareness Day, by organizing an awareness programme at OPD 8, aimed at sensitizing the public on the importance of early detection and treatment of schizophrenia.
Chaired by Dr. Mohd Reyazuddin and Dr. Jitendra Kumar, the event featured an insightful lecture by Dr. Shalija Singh, Senior Resident, who emphasized recognizing early warning signs such as social withdrawal, unusual thoughts, or behavioral changes. She urged family members, relatives, and neighbors to encourage timely consultation with mental health professionals to ensure effective treatment and improved quality of life for patients. Dr. Singh also addressed the need to reduce stigma surrounding mental illness.
Dr. Jitendra Kumar highlighted the critical role of early intervention and discouraged reliance on faith healers, stressing the treatability of schizophrenia when addressed promptly by professionals. He also elaborated on the typical age of onset and the necessity of prompt medical support.
The event concluded with an interactive session, where queries from patients and caregivers were addressed. Junior Residents and Interns from the department actively participated, highlighting the department’s commitment to mental health advocacy.
