His Excellency Guillermo Rubio Funes, Ambassador of El Salvador in India, delivers a talk on “El Salvador: Country and Culture” at JMI

TNN News : The Spanish and Latin American Studies program, Department of Foreign Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia, in collaboration with the Embassy of El Salvador, organized a talk by His Excellency Guillermo Rubio Funes, the Ambassador of El Salvador in India, on 5th August, 2025. The talk titled “El Salvador: Country and Culture” delved into the history, geography, demography, and culture of El Salvador. The program was organized as part of the initiative towards cultural awareness.

The talk was chaired by the Honourable Vice Chancellor, JMI, Prof. Mazhar Asif, who provided his valuable insights on language and its primacy in our social as well as individual life. He motivated students to see languages as key to understanding cultures and also delivered a paragraph in Spanish for the esteemed guests and students. The department extended its gratitude to Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar JMI, and Prof. Iqtiqar Mohd. Khan, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Language, for their support and warm wishes for the success of the talk.

The event began with the inauguration of a photography exhibition by the Vice Chancellor and His Excellency. These photographs represented the vibrancy and the richness of El Salvadoran history, culture, and architecture. The inauguration was followed by a warm welcome by the students of the Spanish program and inaugural remarks by Prof. Noorin Khan, coordinator of the event. Officiating Head, Prof. Sonya Surabhi Gupta, also extended her warm welcome to His Excellency and the honorable Vice-Chancellor for their gracious presence. 

His Excellency, Guillermo Rubio Funes, the Ambassador of El Salvador in India, delivered an illuminating talk on the flourishing culture and beautiful geography of El Salvador. He stressed the need to engage in people-to-people contact for strengthening the learning of language and the culture of the countries it is spoken in. Ms. Ivonne Bonilla, Minister Counsellor of the Embassy, enriched the understanding of the participants by showing a slide show presentation and a documentary on El Salvador’s demography, history, archaeology, geography, architecture, and festivals. She made the activity even more interesting with quizzes and questions in between her presentation. The correct answers were rewarded with a prize. 

The event was attended by eminent faculty members of JMI, including Prof. Indulika Sharma, the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Prof Abuzar Khairi. Prof Najmi, and Dr Mohsin, among others.

The function ended on a vote of thanks, delivered by Mr. Ajay Prasad, Department of Foreign Languages.
