Late Afzal Ali Memorial Swimming Championship Held at AMU

TNN News : The Aligarh Muslim University Swimming Club, in collaboration with the Aligarh District Swimming Association, organised the Late Afzal Ali Memorial Regional Swimming Championship, with more than 100 swimmers from across the region taking part in the event.
The championship commemorated the legacy of Mr. Afzal Ali, a renowned swimming coach who served at Aligarh Muslim University from 1965 to 1988. A graduate of the first batch of the National Institute of Sports, Patiala, and an international referee, Mr. Ali is remembered as a pioneer who laid the foundation of competitive swimming at AMU.
In the men’s category, Sufiyan Akhtar secured the first position, while AahilNaved Usmani finished as runner-up. Among the juniors, Aditya emerged winner in Group I, with Mohd Arsalan Usmani as runner-up. Group II was won by AahilNaved Usmani, followed by Muzammil Abbas in second place. In Group III, the youngest category, AffanNaved Usmani claimed the gold, while Athrav Gaur stood runner-up.
Prof. S. Amjad Ali Rizvi, Secretary of the University Games Committee, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Captain Dr. Farooq Ahmad Dar, President of the AMU Swimming Club, presided over the function.
Paying tribute to the late coach, Prof. Rizvi said that Afzal Ali was “not only the pride of swimming but also a living example of sportsmanship and discipline,” and that the championship was a fitting way to honour his memory. Dr. Dar welcomed the Chief Guest and appreciated the enthusiasm and spirit of the participants.
The championship witnessed an impressive gathering of parents, alumni, and members of the AMU Swimming Club, which created a vibrant sporting atmosphere at the poolside.
