Jamia Millia Islamia Hosts Delegation from Japan Science and Technology Agency to Foster Academic Collaboration

TNN News : Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) yesterday hosted a high-level delegation from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) to explore possibilities for academic collaboration between Japanese institutions and the university.

The JST delegation included Mr. Takashi Konishi, Director & Program Officer, and Mr. Yuji Nishikawa, Advisor, Sakura Science Program, JST. The meeting was attended by senior academic leadership from JMI, including Prof. Ushvinder Kaur Popli, Dean, International Relations; Prof. Tanuja, Dean, Academic Affairs; Prof. Kafeel Ahmad, Dean, Research & Innovation; Prof. Meetu Gupta, Head, Department of Biotechnology; Prof. Tanvir Ahmad, Department of Computer Engineering; and Prof. Mohammad Zulfequar, Department of Physics and Officiating Director, Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

Prof. Ushvinder Kaur Popli welcomed the delegation and introduced the university’s academic landscape, highlighting its diverse faculties, research centers, and ongoing international collaborations. Following this, the Japanese delegation introduced themselves and their respective programs. Mr. Takashi Konishi provided a detailed briefing on JST’s mission and programs, emphasizing its role in promoting academic and research exchanges between India and Japan. He elaborated on JST’s recently launched LOTUS Program, aimed at inviting 300 young Indian researchers annually to Japan for advanced studies and research in key areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Energy, Materials, quantum technologies, semiconductors, and telecommunications.

Mr. Konishi informed the delegation that JST operates similarly to the Department of Science and Technology(DST) in India and facilitates both student and faculty mobility. He clarified that interested students or faculty from Jamia may directly approach Japanese host institutions and faculty members, who will initiate the application process. JST will provide full support for research stays and internships, including opportunities in private sector companies.

Following the discussions, Prof. Mohammad Zulfequar and Prof. Ushvinder Kaur Popli escorted the delegation to the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology to showcase JMI’s research infrastructure and facilities in that domain. The delegates expressed appreciation of the university’s scientific environment and collaborative spirit. The visit marks an important milestone in JMI’s efforts to enhance international engagement, particularly with Japan, and sets the stage for meaningful long-term partnerships in research, innovation, and higher education.
