AMU Hosts Inaugural Prof. Abha Lakshmi Singh Memorial Lecture to Honour a Trailblazing Scholar

TNN News : The Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organized the first Prof. Abha Lakshmi Singh Memorial Lecture to commemorate the birth anniversary of the late Professor Abha Lakshmi Singh, an eminent academic, visionary administrator, and pioneer in gender studies within Indian geography.
In her keynote address titled “Reading Women in Indian Geography: Feminist Lives and the Legacy of Prof. Abha Lakshmi Singh”, Prof. Anindita Datta, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, and Vice-President (Elect), International Geographical Union (IGU), highlighted Prof. Singh’s groundbreaking work in gender and feminist geography, her global academic engagement, and her empowering mentorship.
She also shared a personal connection, noting that Prof. Singh had graciously participated in her 2016 research documenting women’s roles as both subjects and practitioners in the discipline.
Dr. Avantika Singh, daughter of Prof. Singh, offered a heartfelt tribute, speaking about her mother’s ideals, values, and enduring influence on her life.
Prof. Haroon Sajjad, former Chairperson of the Department of Geography at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and a doctoral student of Prof. Singh, offered a moving account of her life, blending scholarly insights with personal recollections.
Prof. Atiqur Rahman, Chairperson, Department of Geography, JMI, credited his academic development to Prof. Singh’s disciplined mentorship and nurturing guidance.
Earlier, welcoming the guest speakers, Prof. Shahab Fazal, Chairperson of the Department of Geography, reflected on Prof. Singh’s exceptional personal and professional qualities. He described her as a mentor who embodied adaptability, quiet strength, and dignity, and whose dedication to her students left an enduring impact.
Dr. Saleha Jamal, also a close associate, described Prof. Singh as a maternal figure whose emotional and academic support had been invaluable.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ahmad Mujtaba Siddiqui.
The event drew participation from faculty members, students, colleagues, and admirers of Prof. Singh’s scholarly legacy.
