Making Waves Across Continents: VC Prof Naima Khatoon Felicitates AMU’s English Channel Champion Afrin Jabee

TNN News : Afrin Jabee, a B.P.Ed. student of Aligarh Muslim University and the first-ever AMU student to successfully swim across the English Channel, met Vice Chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon today after returning from London.
Prof. Khatoon warmly congratulated Afrin on her historic achievement, describing her as a “sports icon of AMU” and expressing confidence that she would continue to bring laurels to the university.
On July 29, 2025, Afrin completed a remarkable 34-kilometre solo swim from Dover (UK) to Cap Gris-Nez (France) in 13 hours and 13 minutes, joining the ranks of elite endurance swimmers worldwide. Her feat has brought immense pride to AMU, West Bengal, and the nation.
Expressing gratitude to her parents, AMU, and the nation for their unwavering support in her daring endeavour, Afrin shared her aspiration to represent India in future Olympic events, particularly in the open-water marathon swimming category. She expressed determination to undergo intensive training to meet the global benchmarks required for such competitions, turning her English Channel triumph into a stepping stone for her Olympic dream.
She was accompanied by her elder brother, Mr Adil Mahammad, a Research Scholar in the Department of Chemistry, AMU.
Controller of Examinations Dr Mujib Ullah Zuberi, Member Incharge of Public Relations Prof. Vibha Sharma, and Public Relations Officer Mr. Omar Peerzada were also present on the occasion.
