Faculty of Dentistry celebrated National Public Health Dentistry Day 2026 at the National Dental Commission
TNN News : The Faculty of Dentistry at Jamia Millia Islamia, in collaboration with the National Dental Commission (NDC), celebrated National Public Health Dentistry Day on 19 June 2026 at the NDC premises in RK Puram, New Delhi. The NDC is the newly formed regulatory body of the Government of India, replacing the Dental Council of India to regulate the dental profession in India. The event was organized under the theme “Healthy Mouth, Healthy Communities, Healthy Nation,” emphasizing the vital role of oral health in improving overall health and well-being and promoting healthier communities across the country.
The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Sanjay Tiwari, Chairperson of NDC and Dr. Chandrashekhar Janakiram, President of the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate Dental Education Board. Addressing the gathering, the dignitaries highlighted the importance of Public Health Dentistry in improving population oral health, reducing oral health disparities, and strengthening preventive oral healthcare services across the country. They appreciated the efforts of the Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, in promoting community oral health through academic and outreach activities. As a constituent Jamia Millia Islamia, one of India’s premier central universities known for its excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, the Faculty of Dentistry has consistently contributed to advancing oral health education, research, and community-based oral health promotion initiatives, with a strong focus on preventive and public health approaches.
In a message shared on the occasion, Prof. Nadeem Yunus, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, JMI, reaffirmed the Faculty’s commitment towards improving community oral health through education, research, service delivery, and community engagement. He emphasized that oral health is an integral component of overall health and highlighted the Faculty’s continued efforts to conduct community outreach programmes that promote oral health awareness, disease prevention, and equitable access to oral healthcare services. He also conveyed his best wishes for the success of the programme and appreciated the collaborative efforts of the National Dental Commission and the Faculty of Dentistry in advancing public oral health.
An interactive oral health education session was delivered by Prof. Abhishek Mehta, who highlighted the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene practices, adopting healthy dietary habits, preventing common oral diseases, and seeking regular dental check-ups. The session encouraged participants to take an active role in preserving their oral health and understanding its impact on overall well-being.
As part of the observance, an Oral Health Screening Camp was organized for the officials and staff members of the National Dental Commission. Around a hundred people were screened and underwent oral health examinations. They also received personalized counselling on maintaining good oral hygiene, preventing oral diseases, and seeking timely dental care. Individuals requiring further treatment were advised to receive appropriate follow-up care.
The activities were successfully conducted with the support of the Faculty of Dentistry team, including faculty members, interns, and support staff, who ensured the smooth organization of the oral health screening camp and educational activities. The programme concluded on a successful note, reinforcing the importance of preventive oral healthcare and collaborative efforts in promoting oral health awareness and improving the oral health of communities.
