TNN News : Prof. Shah Alam, Chairperson, Department of Psychology, Aligarh Muslim University, participated in a two-day international seminar titled ‘Application of Psychology in the Changing World: Understanding, Implementation, and Transformation’, organized by the Department of Psychology, Fakir Mohan University, Odisha. He graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered a keynote address.
In his keynote address, Prof. Alam emphasized that psychology holds universal significance, “for all and for everywhere,” and should be actively applied to resolve real-world problems. Drawing attention to India’s pressing mental health concerns, he highlighted that over 60% of the population lives below the poverty line, making accessible psychological support in education, health, and community development an urgent necessity. He stressed that without community sensitisation, India’s mental health mission cannot be effectively realised.
Referring to government data, Prof. Alam noted that 20% of Indians require regular counselling and underscored the urgent need to train at least 15 lakh counsellors to address this gap. He also advocated the importance of self-regulation in fostering mental well-being, especially in light of the shortage of trained mental health professionals. Issues like suicide prevention and addiction were identified as critical areas demanding focused psychological intervention.
He further stressed the need for developing self-confidence and self-regulation as essential strategies for mental health promotion.
