JMI’s Faculty of Dentistry students secure prestigious ICMR-STS 2026 Research Grant
The Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), has once again demonstrated its commitment to promoting undergraduate research, with two BDS students securing the prestigious Indian Council of Medical Research–Short Term Studentship (ICMR-STS) 2026 research grants.
The ICMR-STS programme is a highly competitive national initiative of ICMR, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, aimed at fostering scientific aptitude and research skills among undergraduate medical and dental students. The programme provides selected students with an opportunity to undertake short-term research projects under the guidance of experienced faculty mentors and gain hands-on exposure to scientific methodology and research.
Under the ICMR-STS 2026 programme, each selected project carries a total stipend of ₹60,000, providing financial support to undergraduate students to undertake their approved research projects. The achievement is particularly significant as the selected projects from the Faculty of Dentistry focus on innovative and technology-enabled approaches to dental education, reflecting the Faculty’s growing emphasis on evidence-based teaching, research-led learning and the integration of contemporary educational technologies.
The ICMR-STS 2026 awardees from the Faculty of Dentistry are:
1. Ms Anushka Gupta
Project Title: Virtual Microscopy versus Conventional Microscopy for Oral Pathology Practical Learning among Undergraduate Students: A Prospective Crossover Study
Mentor: Dr Aman Chowdhry
2. Mr Shams Hasan Khan
Project Title: Comparison of Standardized Video-Based Demonstration (VBD) and NotebookLM-Assisted Instructions with Traditional In-Person Demonstration in Orthodontic Wire-Bending among Undergraduate Dental Students
Mentor: Dr Priyanka Kapoor
Both projects address contemporary opportunities in undergraduate dental education. Ms Anushka Gupta’s study seeks to comparatively evaluate virtual microscopy and conventional microscopy as modalities for oral pathology practical learning, while Mr Shams Hasan Khan’s research explores the effectiveness of standardized video-based demonstration and NotebookLM-assisted instructions in comparison with traditional in-person demonstration for orthodontic wire-bending.
The selection of these projects underscores the Faculty of Dentistry’s efforts to encourage undergraduate students to engage in innovative educational research and explore emerging digital approaches to teaching and learning.
Prof. (Dr) Nadeem Yunus, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, congratulated both the awardees and their faculty mentors on this significant achievement. He appreciated the students for demonstrating research aptitude at the undergraduate level and commended the mentors for their guidance and encouragement in developing the research projects.
