Dept. of TT and NFE (IASE), F/o Education, JMI organises Colloquium Talk on the topic “From Data to Insight: Reflections on Research Practice and Possibilities”

TNN News : As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its research culture, the Department of Teacher Training & Non-Formal Education (IASE), Faculty of Education at Jamia Millia Islamia, organized a colloquium talk titled “From Data to Insight: Reflections on Research Practice and Possibilities” by two distinguished resource persons, Dr. Ben Alcott, Associate Professor, University College London (UCL) and Dr. Jwalin Patel, PhD and Post-Doc, Cambridge University. The talk took place in the Multimedia Hall, IASE, on July 31st, 2025.
The colloquium talk was conducted under the patronage of Prof. Mazhar Asif, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of JMI, and Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar, JMI and was graced by the presence of Prof. Jessy Abraham, Dean, Faculty of Education, and Prof. Farah Farooqi, Head of the Department. The event also witnessed active participation of esteemed faculty members and research scholars who enriched the discussion with their observations and research perspectives.
The event began on a spiritual note with a Qirat, recited by Mr. Mohammad Haider Raza. This was followed by a brief presentation on the history of the University and an overview of the department, by Prof. Farah Farooqi. On behalf of the department, PhD Coordinator Prof. Gurjeet Kaur extended a warm welcome to the guests and formally introduced them.This was followed by felicitation of the guests Dr. Ben Alcott, Dr. Jwalin Patel and Dr. Murari Jha with saplings and craft items made by students of the department.
The talk, convened by PhD Coordinators Prof Gurjeet Kaur and Dr. MohdMamur Ali and delivered with the collaborated efforts of Dr. Alcott and Dr. Patel explored the complexities and potential of mixed methods in educational research. The session proved to be highly enriching for researchers, as the resource person encouraged them to adopt a truly mixed-method approach in their research, fostering methodological depth. The discussion further moved to the importance of establishing resonance between qualitative and quantitative data, emphasizing the need to meaningfully relate the both rather than treating them as separate entities. Dr. Patel highlighted the significance of pilot studies in educational research and urged scholars to reflect on how their research could be both actionable and impactful. At the request of the audience, the talk included additional insights on various research methods, along with graphic presentations from the field. The talk was interactive and enriching, marked by the sharing of valuable field experiences by the resource persons and faculty members, which added practical insights to the academic discourse.
Following the discussion, the research scholars and faculty members engaged in a dynamic discussion with the resource person sharing their reflections and doubts in the Q & A session. Dr. Murari Jha, addressed the audience and expressed his connect with the university over the past years and motivated scholars to do research that has something to give back to the society.

The colloquium was successful in providing valuable insights into the effective use of mixed data in research. It was formally concluded with the vote of thanks by Ms. Tisha Goswami followed by a group photo session.
