Breastfeeding Week Seminar at AMU Highlights Medication Safety and Support Systems for Lactating Mothers

TNN News : In observance of World Breastfeeding Week 2025, the Department of Pharmacology at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), under the aegis of the ADR Monitoring Centre of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI), organized a seminar titled “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.”
A keynote presentation was delivered by Dr. Pragya HangmaSubba, a final-year resident, on “Safe Use of Medicines in Lactation.” She offered a scientific overview of drug transfer into breast milk and categorized medications based on safety profiles for lactating mothers. Dr. Subba also highlighted the FDA’s updated labeling approach, which replaces conventional risk categories with more nuanced, evidence-based guidance.
Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the critical importance of breastfeeding as a public health imperative. He traced the evolution of global efforts led by UNICEF and WHO to promote breastfeeding and curb harmful bottle-feeding practices.
The seminar was enlightening for both healthcare professionals and aspiring medical practitioners, emphasizing the need for cautious prescribing practices and increased awareness among lactating mothers about medication safety. Dr. Pragya Hangma was awarded a certificate of appreciation by Dr. Jameel Ahmad on behalf of the department.
The event drew participation from faculty and residents of the Department of Pharmacology and undergraduate students from Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed Dental College & Hospital, AMU.
