Mentorship Workshop Organized by HISI Aligarh Chapter under ASM Grant

TNN News : The Hospital Infection Society India (HISI), Aligarh Chapter, organized a comprehensive workshop on mentorship under the aegis of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). The event was supported by the Young Ambassador Project Grant awarded to Prof. Fatima Khan by ASM. The workshop aimed to explore values, frameworks, and practical approaches to effective mentorship in academic and clinical settings.
Welcoming guests, Prof. Tamkin Khan introduced the objectives of the workshop. Dr. Mohd. Salman Shah formally inaugurated the program, while Prof. Amanullah Khan, former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He highlighted the enduring significance of mentorship in shaping academic careers and personal development.
Prof. Najam Khalique (Department of Community Medicine) emphasized the importance of such initiatives at JNMC and advocated for thoughtful and sustainable efforts to embed mentorship as a core institutional value.
Prof. Haris M. Khan, President of the HISI Aligarh Chapter, commended the organizing team and shared his reflections on the impact of meaningful mentor-mentee relationships on his professional journey.
The scientific sessions featured distinguished speakers with extensive experience in mentoring. Prof. Navjeevan Singh, Founder Coordinator of the Mentorship Program at UCMS, presented a detailed account of the conceptualization, initial challenges, and success strategies of the UCMS mentorship model.
Prof. Satendra Singh, a committed member of the UCMS Mentorship Committee and a renowned human rights advocate, underscored the significance of inclusivity and empathy in mentorship and its broader social implications.
Prof. Afroz Abidi shared comparative mentorship practices from the Era Institute, discussing institutional strategies required to adapt mentorship programs across diverse academic environments. A team of JNMC faculty members — Prof. Tamkin Khan, Prof. Fatima Khan, Prof. Mohammad Akram, Prof. Shagufta Moin, and Dr. Mohd. Salman Shah — led interactive sessions addressing the definition, principles, and essential components of mentorship. Topics discussed included various mentorship models, mutual benefits, challenges, and effective implementation strategies tailored to institutional needs.
